Description

WHERE THE STONE STILL SPEAKS Andean Photography Residency · Chavín de Huántar · Áncash · Peru · February 2027 There are territories that do not let themselves be photographed at first glance. In the mountains of Áncash, festivals, sounds, masks, crosses and ancient sacred stones are part of a memory that spans centuries. In this territory, the huancas, ancient stones associated with places of power and ancestral presence, were gradually replaced or reinterpreted by crosses, giving rise to a complex landscape where old Andean worldviews continue to converse with the Christian world. This is the setting for our Andean Photography Residency in Chavín de Huántar, a journey conceived to observe, understand and photograph the territory from a documentary and personal perspective. The photographer Luis Hernán Herreros will accompany participants in the field every day, guiding the process of observing, shooting and building a series of their own. The residency also includes review, selection and editing sessions, leading to a final photographic proposal. The route will be guided by Rodrigo Covacevich, ethnomusicologist and founder of Puttutu Expediciones, who will offer a perspective on the history, the sounds, the rituals and the ways of understanding the Andean territory. The experience will culminate in Huaraz, during its traditional Carnival: an explosion of color, music, characters and ritual that will allow us to close the journey by photographing one of the great popular celebrations of the Andes. A residency to enter the territory, listen to its stories and turn the experience into images. February 2027 · Chavín de Huántar · Áncash · Peru Photographic mentoring: Luis Hernán Herreros Direction and cultural context: Rodrigo Covacevich · Puttutu Expediciones Includes field mentoring, review and editing, a final exhibition and a certificate of participation.

Itinerary

Day1

Day 1, Meeting in Lima

All participants meet in Lima, and we leave at night for Huaraz.

Day2

Day 2, Arrival in Huaraz

We arrive in Huaraz at 6:30 am, where our transport meets us and takes us to the Hotel Churup for breakfast. There we get ready and receive an introduction to the territory we will be in, and to the dynamics of the festival, its symbolism, traditions and cultural expressions, led by Rodrigo Covacevich. After that, we continue to Chavín de Huántar, where most of the Andean Photography Residency will take place. Once settled in, we will explore the town and locate the places where the festival of the Andean crosses unfolds, so that each photographer can start planning their own route. In the afternoon we will gather for the first introduction to the workshop, led by Luis Hernán Herreros, followed by dinner and a good night of rest.

Day3

Field outings

Today we will take part in the activities in small groups, individually or all together, looking for the photographs we want to make. From 3:00 pm we will start working on the selection and review of the material.

Day4

Day of the dancing crosses

We will watch the procession of the crosses as they arrive from different communities to the town square. In the afternoon we will gather to work on selection and editing.

Day5

The Crosses Return to Their Place on the Mountain

Today the communities take the crosses back to where they will remain until the following year, a unique procession along the hillsides, until each cross is set in its place. Every photographer can take part in this event to complete their photographic record. In the afternoon we gather in the workshop to continue preparing the final presentation.

Day6

The Tree of Life

This ancient tradition, in which a tree is felled to give life to a cycle of abundance, is deeply ancestral and takes place amid countless situations within the community. Knowing how to observe and wait for the moment will be the key for every photographer on this day and night.

Day7

Carnaval y Muestra final

Day8
